There has been little evidence that Mr. Santos had done much campaign work or fund-raising for the contest. Nevertheless, he said he would stay in the race and take his “Ultra MAGA/Trump supporting values to the ballot in November as an independent.”If he does so, he could potentially draw some votes away from Mr. LaLota, which would benefit the undetermined Democratic candidate in a district that Donald J. Trump won by just under 2 points in 2020. Even so, neither Mr. LaLota nor Jesse Garcia, the Suffolk County Republican Party chairman, seemed particularly concerned by Mr. Santos’s threat. “George Santos is irrelevant to the electoral process,” Mr. Garcia said upon hearing the news, adding that the announcement was nothing more than a ploy for attention. Mr. LaLota said in a statement that just as Mr. Santos’s expulsion had been good for the nation, his resignation from the Republican Party was good for “common-sense conservatives.”

CNN has reached out to Heuermann’s attorney, the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office and the Suffolk County Police Department for comment. Here is a timeline of the Gilgo Beach killings, how the investigation unfolded and what ultimately led to Heuermann’s arrest. Two days later, investigators discovered the remains of three additional victims – Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Amber Costello and Megan Waterman – strewn across a half-mile stretch on Gilgo Beach. Authorities later said they believed Gilbert’s death may have been accidental and not related to the Gilgo Beach slayings. The task force included the Suffolk County Police Department, the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office, the New York State Police and the FBI.

After 13 years of dead ends and blown leads, the Gilgo Beach murder investigation finally turned on pizza crusts that Rex Heuermann had tossed in a trash can in Midtown Manhattan. It was a jackpot for investigators who had watched Mr. Heuermann for months. “Pizza crust is like a sponge — it allowed the saliva to seep into the dough,” Ray Tierney, the Suffolk County district attorney, said in a recent interview. The sample gave investigators the genetic match that helped connect Mr. Heuermann to four bodies found in 2010 on Long Island, and his arrest followed in July, Mr. Tierney said. Investigators say the DNA profile obtained from a male hair found on the burlap used to wrap one of the four victims found in 2010, Megan Waterman, corresponds to the pizza slice sample from Mr. Heuermann.

But Republicans are thriving on Long Island, and they could win the upcoming special election. AdvertisementRepublican Anne Donnelly won the Nassau County district attorney's race in 2021. Republicans actually have a benchRepublicans in recent years have begun to claw back power across Long Island. Joe Cairo, the chairman of the Nassau County Republican Committee, is currently interviewing roughly 22 individuals for the seat. But Republicans can't be discounted in the district given the current political shifts on Long Island.

It seemed like a classic John Ray news conference last month, with the flamboyant Long Island lawyer stepping up to news cameras, bedecked in a polka dot tie and matching fedora. Now Mr. Ray had something new: the police at his side. Mr. Heuermann, a Long Island architect and suburban father, was arrested in July and charged with killing three of the 11 people whose remains were found at or near Gilgo Beach on the South Shore a dozen years ago. As Mr. Ray detailed the claims, the Gilgo Beach Task Force, the team investigating the case, watched the broadcast and seethed. They had become used to Mr. Ray as a gadfly delivering barbs and brickbats with a flourish from his pewter-handled cane.

ELWOOD, N.Y. (AP) — A police officer fatally shot a man who charged at authorities with two swords on Long Island, New York, and the police commissioner said Wednesday that the shooting appeared to be justified. Police responded to a 911 call reporting a man acting violently inside a home. Weber was screaming and breaking items when officers arrived and refused to come outside, police said in a statement. Weber then charged, and one officer fired several shots, Harrison said. Harrison said he reviewed officers' body camera video and “at this time I believe it's a justified shooting.”

One night in September 2016, two teenage girls were walking down a street in the Long Island hamlet of Brentwood when they were spotted by four members of MS-13, a violent transnational gang with Salvadoran roots. Federal prosecutors said the MS-13 members had set out that evening in a car looking for rival gang members to kill. When they saw Kayla Cuevas, 16, prosecutors added, they recognized her as someone their gang had designated for death after a series of disputes with MS-13 members on social media and at school. They gave the order to kill Kayla and her 15-year-old friend, Nisa Mickens, prosecutors said. One of the gang members in the car, Enrique Portillo, 19, and two younger members then attacked and killed the girls with baseball bats and a machete, prosecutors said.

CNN —Two women held in Suffolk County jail say they had encounters with the Gilgo Beach killings suspect Rex Heuermann, describing the meetings with him as “violent” and “aggressive,” sheriff’s department spokesperson Vicki DiStefano said Thursday. The alleged encounters with the two female sex workers are believed to have happened more than a decade ago, said DiStefano, noting the women expressed concern for their safety during the time they say they were with Heuermann. The information was uncovered as part of ongoing interviews by the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department human trafficking unit, which was created to help those incarcerated have access to services and support they need to recover. Since Heuermann’s July 13 arrest, the unit has been interviewing sex workers, as well as showing a picture of Heuermann to women, to see if they recall any interactions with him. He has pleaded not guilty in the killings of Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman and Amber Lynn Costello.

As Cohen approached the area, she says she “slipped and fell on a piece of prosciutto on the floor injuring her left ankle resulting in a fracture,” the lawsuit states. Cohen’s medical expenses as a result of the injury were more than $7,500, according to court documents, which included the hospital fees, doctor fees and physical therapy. The lawsuit claims that Eataly failed to make sure the floor was safe and “free from unnecessary dangers,” for patrons. CNN has reached out to Eataly Boston and the Cohen’s attorney for comment.

CNN —The wife of the Gilgo Beach serial killings suspect Rex Heuermann and her attorney told CNN she had “no idea” of her husband’s alleged actions and that the flood of public attention has been “extremely overwhelming” for the mother and her two children. He is also the prime suspect in the disappearance and killing of the fourth victim but has yet to be charged in that case. Authorities have said Ellerup and the children were out of town when the killings occurred. The spotlight on the family has attracted onlookers who show up at the home “just to get a glimpse of what’s going on at the house,” Macedonio said. Ellerup has been in touch with Heuermann since his arrest, the attorney said, though he did not provide further details.

Rex Heuermann, the Long Island architect charged in the Gilgo Beach serial murder case, kept 279 weapons in his rundown home, most of them in a basement vault big enough to walk into, the authorities said on Tuesday. Mr. Heuermann had lived with his family in the dilapidated one-story house with the unkempt yard on First Avenue in Massapequa Park, N.Y., for years, commuting to his architectural consultancy in Manhattan. As they’ve worked, the house has become something of a tourist attraction for true crime fans and a daily encampment for news crews covering the case. Mr. Heuermann has been charged with killing Amber Lynn Costello, 27; Melissa Barthelemy, 24; and Megan Waterman, 22. He is the prime suspect in the murder of Maureen Brainard-Barnes, 25.

CNN —Authorities have received a flood of evidence and information related to the suspect charged in some of the Gilgo Beach killings since his arrest, the Suffolk County District Attorney told CNN on Monday. Authorities have had Heuermann on their radar for more than a year as investigators gathered enough evidence to make an arrest. The Gilgo Beach Victims Were Always More Than Escorts

As the police scoured the beach for more bodies in the spring of 2010 (and found several), Ms. Cann and the family members of the other women were caught in a peculiar bind. Now that they were part of a serial-killer case, the world was beating a path to their doors; perhaps there might even be a break in the case. Then came the horrible hangover of seeing their daughters and sisters in the news, constantly being referred to as prostitutes. The point Ms. Cann made to me on that pier was similar to what all the family members eventually said to me: These women were more than this. “I don’t like how they’re talking about her,” Ms. Cann told me.

The three women that Rex Heuermann is accused of killing — Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman and Amber Lynn Costello — were discovered wrapped in burlap near Gilgo Beach on Long Island’s South Shore in December 2010. A fourth woman, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, was found in the same spot, alongside the other victims, and Mr. Heuermann is also the prime suspect her death, according to the bail application from the Suffolk County District attorney’s office on Friday. The investigation into her death “is continuing and is expected to be resolved soon,” the prosecutors wrote. Mr. Heuermann, an architect who has lived most of his life in Nassau County and worked in Manhattan, on Friday pleaded not guilty to murder in the case of the first three victims and was ordered held without bail.

He was expected to be arraigned Friday after his arrest Thursday night in Manhattan, said Suffolk County Police Commissioner Rodney K. Harrison. "We anticipate an indictment later on this afternoon," said Harrison, whose agency and the Suffolk County district attorney are leading the investigation. According to NBC New York, Gilbert was not the only victim who was a sex worker. In May 2022, Suffolk County police released 911 audio related to Gilbert's disappearance. The development comes after a multi-agency task force made up of FBI, New York State Police and Suffolk County authorities was established in February 2022 to "reinvigorate" the investigation.

CNN —A New York architect is in custody for the Gilgo Beach murders, an unsolved case tied to at least 10 sets of human remains discovered since 2010 in suburban Long Island, according to two law enforcement sources. Law enforcement arrive at a Long Island house Friday, July 14, 2023. Eduardo Munoz Alvarez/APAuthorities later said they believe Gilbert’s death may have been accidental and not related to the Gilgo Beach slayings. Additional remains were uncovered in neighboring Gilgo Beach and in Nassau County, about 40 miles east of New York City. Mack’s partial remains were first discovered near Gilgo Beach in 2000, with additional dismembered remains found in 2011, according to the Suffolk County police.

The straight, quiet stretch of Ocean Parkway would give him plenty of time to listen and watch for coming cars. The isolation provided investigators their first clue: The killer knew Long Island well enough to find perhaps its most secluded place. “I don’t think it’s a coincidence that four bodies wound up in this area,” Richard Dormer, the Suffolk County police commissioner, told reporters days after the discovery. The investigation into the murders became mired in a police corruption scandal, after which the case went cold for years. Some local politicians grew frustrated and worried that police had bungled the case.
